Designing a reliable clinical trial requires more than an interesting medical question. WHO reported in October on a Singapore workshop that brought together 77 participants to strengthen practical research skills. The event, organized with the ADVANCE-ID network, took place from late August to early September. Researchers examined study design, statistical methods, feasibility and public engagement. Before attending, they completed an online course so that shared concepts could be applied during the workshop rather than introduced from scratch.
Small groups then developed proposals with guidance from specialists, including statisticians and public engagement experts. Presenting their ideas allowed participants to receive feedback before pursuing a full study. Discussions also considered barriers in lower-income settings, such as infrastructure, ethical procedures and limited diagnostic capacity. Ten participants from African institutions attended with WHO support, adding experience from different research environments. A continuing seminar series will help non-statisticians understand trial analysis. The broader goal is research that is both scientifically robust and workable in local conditions.
