An international vaccine group announced an initial allocation of 70,000 Ervebo doses to the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Of that total, 20,000 doses will support a Phase 3 clinical trial during the Bundibugyo virus outbreak. The remaining 50,000 doses are intended for frontline and health workers under current expert recommendations. Ervebo is licensed for outbreaks caused by Ebola virus, formerly called Zaire ebolavirus.
Whether Ervebo protects people against Bundibugyo virus remains unknown, although early laboratory and animal evidence suggests a possible benefit. Human data are not yet available. The trial is designed to produce evidence that can guide future vaccine policy. WHO and Africa CDC stress that recipients need clear information about risks, potential benefits and limitations before giving informed consent. The allocation therefore aims to protect people now while improving preparedness for future outbreaks.
