New Mexico's Elephant Butte Reservoir reached its lowest level since 1971 after years of drought in the Rio Grande basin. A Landsat image from 27 July 2026 showed the lake at only 1.4% of capacity. In comparison, the reservoir was nearly full in June 1994 and fell to 2.9% during another drought in July 2013. Exceptionally early snowmelt in the southern Rockies further reduced water available downstream.
The reservoir supports irrigation in a dry valley where farmers grow crops including pecans, onions and regional green chillies. Water releases for agriculture stopped after 28 July, allowing the lake to begin refilling slowly. NASA-supported projects combine satellite observations, drone measurements and ground data to help managers allocate water and study how groundwater pumping affects river flow. The episode shows why long-term drought demands both monitoring and careful sharing of limited supplies.
