Rangelands cover almost half of Earth's land surface. They support hundreds of millions of livelihoods. Ranchers and pastoralists use these landscapes to raise livestock, often on plants that people cannot eat. In July 2026, farmers, researchers and officials met in Canada and the United States. They discussed the environmental, economic and cultural value of these lands.
Participants visited ranches that protect native grass and test soil health practices. Some farmers use short grazing periods, then move animals so plants can recover. FAO says longer and more frequent droughts make rangeland restoration more urgent. The international year is supported by 102 countries and more than 400 organisations. The 2026 international year promotes evidence sharing, better policy and recognition for people who steward these ecosystems.
