Europe's new MTG-I2 weather satellite is being prepared for launch on an Ariane 6 rocket. Engineers inspect every hinge, bolt and surface before liftoff. They also test electronic and mechanical systems. More than 30 ESA staff are involved in the campaign, while teams from several organisations coordinate key tasks. The planned launch date is 27 August 2026.
MTG-I2 should operate in orbit for at least eight and a half years. It will observe lightning, clouds, the atmosphere and developing storms in great detail. The spacecraft must remain stable because tiny movements can reduce image quality. After launch, ground teams must quickly receive its first signal and check its health. Careful rehearsals help the satellite team and launch team follow the same procedures during this critical phase.
