UNESCO and Nghệ An Province have launched a disaster preparedness project in western Viet Nam. It will improve monitoring for flash floods and landslides in two pilot communes. Mountain communities may have little time between the first warning signs and a disaster. Fast communication must therefore connect reliable data with clear local decisions. The project will review risk maps and options for upgrading warning systems.
Schools are a central part of the plan. Teachers, students and communities will help identify hazards and practise response procedures. Selected schools will test preparedness plans that also support learning during recovery. A core group of education officials and teachers will receive practical training. The project is expected to directly benefit about 15,000 people. Its tools and lessons may later guide work in other provinces and at national level.
