Landsat 9 photographed a large iceberg in the Denmark Strait in June 2026. It measured about 17 square kilometres and had travelled far from northeastern Greenland. By mid-August, it was roughly 1,500 kilometres from the bay where scientists think its journey began. Ocean currents carried it south between Greenland and Iceland. Such a long journey is uncommon for ice from this region.
Following the iceberg was difficult because sea ice and snow hid its outline during spring. Later images revealed blue meltwater ponds and other features that offered clues about its origin. Satellite records helped researchers compare its shape across several months. Experts expected the iceberg to break into smaller remnants during August. This breakup made it less likely to reach busy shipping routes farther south.
