Europe is moving a secure satellite network called IRIS² toward construction. A new agreement adds 66 satellites and brings the main constellation to 348. Most satellites will travel in low Earth orbit. ESA will guide technical work, qualification and validation in orbit. The project aims to protect important online communications.
The network will give reliable connections to governments and emergency services. It should keep teams connected during crises and in remote places. The first launches are planned for 2029. Companies will build secure ground systems and prepare launch services. European start-ups and smaller businesses may also join the supply chain.
