WHO recently launched a free online course about safe health-care waste management. It is for hospital staff, planners, waste workers and other professionals. The course has six modules and usually takes two hours or less. Learners can study in one sitting or finish it over several sessions.
Lessons cover sorting, storage, transport, treatment and final disposal. They also explain recycling and the safe management of pharmaceutical waste and mercury-containing devices. Good waste management protects patients, workers, communities and nature. WHO says trained staff and clear responsibilities are as important as treatment equipment. No earlier knowledge is required to join this course.
