Timor-Leste has inaugurated its first university history department at the Universidade Nacional Timor Lorosa'e, known as UNTL. The department expects to welcome its first students in January 2027. Its two specialisations will focus on history teaching and heritage management. Oral history will have an important role because much of the country's recent past survives in living memory. Testimonies can be studied alongside archives and audiovisual collections, giving researchers different kinds of evidence to consider.
The initiative received support through a UNESCO project funded by the Republic of Korea. Academic partners discussed staff training, research cooperation and access to historical materials during the inauguration. Before teaching begins, the department still needs to secure suitable staff, facilities and funding. Establishing a department is therefore a starting point rather than the end of the work. Its wider educational purpose includes helping students evaluate sources and understand history through more than one perspective.
