A FAO feature published in September examines how dairy farmers in Mongolia are adapting to increasingly difficult production conditions. Harsh winters, drought and rising costs make a stable milk supply challenging. FAO and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development are supporting farmers through technical advice and investment planning. Digital tools collect information about production and environmental performance. Advisers use this evidence to identify improvements rather than assume that the same solution will suit each farm.
Farmers can receive guidance on feed and practices designed to reduce emissions and pressure on grazing land. Another option is a cluster farm, where several producers share services such as milk cooling, collection and veterinary care. One farmer featured in the report plans to adopt this arrangement as her business grows. Sharing infrastructure could make essential services more accessible to smaller producers. However, that plan remains a future step for her, illustrating the difference between available support and an investment that has already been completed.
