A workshop in Kassala, Sudan, has brought education, media and community representatives together to discuss hate speech. UNESCO and education authorities organised the meeting to strengthen local action and respectful dialogue. Participants considered the roles of schools, cultural activities and local media in helping people understand one another. The discussion treated social trust as a shared responsibility, rather than a task for one institution alone.
One planned step is to develop awareness messages for radio and television in several local languages and dialects. The aim is to make the messages relevant to the people who hear them. Cooperation between educators, media workers and communities will be important for this work. The workshop produced directions for further action. The report does not provide evidence that hate speech has already fallen as a result.
