UNESCO has introduced three guidance tools to help education systems put sustainability into practice. Released in September 2026, they cover school-wide change, teaching skills and the assessment of learning. The tools were developed and tested with 41 institutions in ten countries between 2024 and 2026. Teachers and school leaders helped shape them by trying approaches and sharing feedback from their own settings.
Schools can use the resources separately or combine them. The approach connects what students learn with how an institution operates and works with its community. Assessment is also part of the picture: educators need ways to understand learning and improve their teaching. The guidance presents sustainability as more than an extra topic. It encourages schools to connect sustainability with teaching, decisions and daily activities across the institution.
