Children in Oaxaca, Mexico, are discovering local heritage through play and guided visits. Activities began with free summer tours in 2026, supported by the municipality and UNESCO. The programme is expanding to reach more than 300 children at five primary schools, including schools outside the city centre. Its aim is to help young residents build a stronger connection with the places and traditions around them.
Trained guides use activity booklets and familiar games to make the visits engaging. Children can explore buildings alongside the knowledge and customs that give those places meaning. The project therefore goes beyond asking children to remember historical facts. It invites them to notice how heritage appears in everyday life. The planned school expansion will bring these learning opportunities to a wider group of children.
