More than 150 people met in Nepal from 18 to 20 September 2026 to discuss the Greater Lumbini Area. The conference brought together officials, experts, businesses, monasteries and local communities. Visits to important sites helped participants consider the needs of both pilgrims and residents. Discussions focused on protecting the area's peaceful, sacred character while improving access and creating opportunities for local people.
Working groups developed recommendations with priorities, timelines and clear responsibilities. These included better planning and drainage studies before new construction begins. Participants also considered how visitors could learn about the meaning of local rituals. The meeting produced an action plan, rather than completed building work. Its next challenge is turning shared ideas into coordinated steps that support heritage protection and community development together.
