Replacing an old mobile network involves more than switching off equipment. Vietnam's move away from 2G required newer coverage and help for people using older phones. Services for phones supporting only 2G ended in late October 2024, while some other connections continued longer. The network was switched off in September 2026. Older users, low-income households and people in remote areas faced particular difficulties with costs and unfamiliar devices.
Viettel added more than six thousand 4G base stations as part of its preparations. However, coverage alone did not remove the price barrier for replacing a phone. The company offered cheaper devices and worked with a public telecommunications fund to support eligible households. Staff also visited villages to help residents change SIM cards and learn basic operations. The experience shows why technical upgrades need practical support for the people affected.
