Fabric softener makes clothes feel smooth. It coats the fibers with a thin layer. But experts say some items should not get this coating. Towels are one example. The coating slowly makes them less able to absorb water. For fluffy towels, shake them well before hanging them up.
Microfiber cloths use fine fibers to collect dirt. Softener coats these fibers and makes the cloths less effective. Sportswear is designed to pull sweat away from the skin, and softener can interfere with this. Softener can also interfere with the coatings on some waterproof jackets. Do not use softener on clothes labeled flame-resistant, such as some children's sleepwear. It can make them burn more easily. Always check the care label first.
