October brings several things to see in the night sky. On October 4, Saturn reaches opposition. This happens when Earth passes between the Sun and Saturn. So the ringed planet rises around sunset and stays visible for much of the night. NASA says it is one of the best chances this year to see Saturn.
Later, the Orionid meteor shower peaks on the night of October 21. These meteors come from tiny pieces left by Halley's Comet. A bright Moon will make some of the fainter ones hard to see. The best time may be a few hours before dawn, after the Moon sets. On October 27, the Moon passes close to a famous star cluster, the Pleiades.
