Hot water is not always best for washing clothes. Cold water helps keep colors bright and protects soft fabrics. Modern detergents are designed to clean well at low temperatures, a review analyst says. Cold washing also uses less energy. Dark and brightly colored clothes are good examples. Jeans keep their color better in cold water too.
Sportswear and swimsuits contain elastic fibers. Heat can weaken these fibers, and the clothes lose their shape over time. Wool sweaters may shrink in warm or hot water. After washing, lay them flat to dry. If you do not know what caused a stain, start with cold water. Heat can set some stains, such as fresh blood, and make them harder to remove.
