Thirty years ago, American astronaut Shannon Lucid finished a very special mission. She lived for six months on Mir, a Russian space station. She worked there with two Russian cosmonauts and studied life in space. Her mission lasted 188 days. At that time, this was a record for a woman and for an American.
Lucid joined NASA in 1978 as one of its first six female astronauts. After the flight, she received a special medal from the U.S. president. She was the first woman to get this honor. Later, she guided science work at NASA and talked with crews in orbit. Her story still inspires many young people today.
