Viet Nam's coast guard is working to stop illegal fishing before boats cross into foreign waters. Coast Guard Region 3 patrols a huge sea area and keeps a forward post near the waters of Indonesia and Malaysia. On 23 August, its ships stopped three fishing vessels that were heading toward a neighbouring country. Officers also found problems with the boats' monitoring devices, which record each vessel's position at sea.
Two boats that kept devices from other vessels were fined 166 million dong in late 2025. In the first half of 2026, officers warned more than 1,300 boats that lost their monitoring signal. They also explained the rules directly to over 10,000 fishing vessels. Viet Nam hopes these efforts will help remove the European Commission's 'yellow card' warning over illegal fishing.
