Prime Minister Le Minh Hung has asked the World Trade Organization to expand its support for Viet Nam. He met WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala in New Delhi on 12 September, while attending the 18th BRICS Summit in India. The Vietnamese leader proposed more projects on trade policy training, legal advice for international disputes, and smoother trade procedures. He also encouraged the organization to reform itself and to address newer issues, from digital trade and artificial intelligence to climate change.
In response, Okonjo-Iweala praised Viet Nam's economic performance and its nearly twenty years of WTO membership since 2007. She described the country as a clear success story of the rules-based trading system. The WTO chief welcomed Viet Nam's ratification of the fisheries subsidies agreement and noted its shift toward higher-value products, including semiconductors. She confirmed that the organization will continue to accompany Viet Nam as the country prepares for its third trade policy review in November.
