Bees are important pollinators, but they are not the only ones. Butterflies, birds, bats and many other animals can carry pollen between flowers. FAO says that more than 200,000 animal species are pollinators and that most of them are wild. There are also more than 20,000 bee species.
Pollination supports food security because many crops depend on animals for at least part of this work. It also supports wild plants and biodiversity. Habitat loss and climate change can harm a pollinator species. Protecting different pollinators therefore helps farms, natural ecosystems and the people who depend on them. Protecting pollinator diversity supports food and ecosystems. The lesson is to notice the many species behind a service that people often take for granted.
