Electric cars are no longer growing only in a few wealthy markets. The International Energy Agency reported that global electric-car sales passed seventeen million in 2024, more than one fifth of all new cars sold. Growth was especially strong in several emerging markets, including parts of Southeast Asia and Latin America, where a wider range of lower-priced models became available.
Sales figures, however, tell only part of the story. Drivers also need charging that is convenient, reliable and suited to different homes. Governments must consider electricity networks, apartment parking and long-distance travel, while buyers compare the full cost of owning a car rather than the purchase price alone. The transition therefore depends on infrastructure as well as vehicles.
