UNESCO's leader, Khaled El-Enany, made his first official visit to Ukraine. He met President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and other government leaders. Together they talked about education, culture, science and news media. El-Enany also went to the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, a World Heritage site. The site was marking its 975th anniversary.
A reported strike on 15 June 2026 badly damaged the Dormition Cathedral there. Experts found damage to more than 80% of its roof. UNESCO promised USD 100,000 from its emergency fund for urgent repairs. Switzerland will give USD 732,000 through UNESCO to plan a new roof. El-Enany said the cathedral matters deeply to Ukraine and to everyone.
