NASA has modernized a software tool that engineers use to predict how rocket fuels behave. The original program, written in an older programming language, was released in 2002 and became hard to maintain and extend. The new version keeps the same trusted calculations, but it can now be called directly from Python, C, MATLAB and Excel. Older input files still work through a classic command-line interface, so teams need not rebuild existing workflows.
The upgrade also widens the chemical database, adding green propellant ingredients and candidate sustainable aviation fuels. Speed results are mixed. A single calculation runs about 40 percent slower than before, although the real difference is roughly 0.004 seconds. For large studies the gain is dramatic: a sweep of 108,500 cases finished in about 1.11 seconds, compared with around 15 minutes previously. NASA advises engineers to keep reviewing and validating results carefully when they move mission-critical work to the new version.
