Cancer kills more than 26,000 people daily. It is the second leading cause of death after heart disease. Right now, 20.6 million people get cancer each year. Without urgent action, this number will rise to nearly 35 million by 2050. The WHO says people can prevent many cases. Nearly four in ten cases are linked to preventable risks. These include infections, tobacco, alcohol, high weight and inactivity.
Poor countries face bigger cancer problems. In rich countries, 87% of women with breast cancer survive for five years. In poor countries, only 42% survive. At least 45% of people affected by cancer experience financial hardship. WHO says survival should not depend on income.
