This August, people saw many shooting stars in the night sky. They were Perseid meteors. The year 2026 was very good for watching them. The Moon was not in the sky, so the night was darker. More meteors were visible than usual. Why was the Moon missing? It was in front of the Sun during a total solar eclipse.
Perseid meteors come from a comet called Swift-Tuttle. When Earth moves through space, it hits tiny pieces from this comet. Most pieces are as small as a grain of sand. They travel very fast and burn brightly in our atmosphere. People can see them best in August every year. A meteor burns because of friction with air.
