Vietnam Airlines flight VN34 was flying from Munich to Hanoi when it took off at 1:57 p.m. local time on Aug. 16, 2026. Shortly after departure, automated systems triggered warnings about tire pressure problems and a possible tail strike during takeoff. The crew followed safety procedures, contacted air traffic control and returned to Munich Airport for a technical check. The Boeing 787-9 landed safely, and all 271 passengers and 16 crew members left the aircraft using mobile stairs.
Germany is now leading the investigation, since international rules give the country where an incident happens the main responsibility for inquiries. Vietnam's Civil Aviation Authority is coordinating with German investigators and has asked for regular updates on their progress. This cooperation follows Decree 221/2026, which outlines Vietnam's role in safety management and coordination during aviation incidents. The Boeing 787-9 has been moved for inspection, and Vietnam Airlines arranged alternative flights for all affected passengers.
